The Grand Hotel is probably one of the oldest hotels in Melbourne. It is located within walking distance to the Southern Cross Railway Station, Crown Entertainment Complex, Southbank, Etihad Stadium, & the Melbourne CBD. It used to be the Victorian Railways Administration building and is considered an iconic landmark in the city.

I was intrigued at how it has managed to stay strong for this long given the popularity of the newer high-class hotels that have emerged within the central business district. Out of curiosity, I decided to spend 2 nights at this hotel with my wife and I am happy to say that the Grand Hotel did not disappoint.

The Grand was able to maintain its old world charm without sacrificing the quality and usefulness of its facilities. The wide corridors, high ceilings and décor provided unique contrast to the modern amenities of the hotel. Our room was situated at the fourth floor. It was spacious and had a flat screen TV for our entertainment. It also had kitchen facilities that includes a fridge, microwave, oven and dishwasher. The bed was comfortable – not too soft and not too hard as well. The staff were very friendly and accommodating. They ushered us to our room and carried our luggage for us. They showed us around even to the rather secluded areas like the heated indoor pool and sauna. Everything was actually superb. The only thing I questioned was why was there no complimentary tea and coffee? Unfortunately, the hotel guys didn’t know the answer.

Overall, we think that the Grand Hotel lives up to its name. It is one of the many landmarks that Melbourne can be proud of.
